Find Your Fashion in Downtown Sidney

– by Erin Bremner –

There is one great recommendation from the 2015 Vogue trend report that really stood out to me: the importance of a great white shirt. For both men and women, it’s a wardrobe staple. If you don’t have one, or if yours is looking a little tired, it’s time to go shopping!

But let’s face it, most of us in Sidney are less concerned with what’s in fashion, and more interested in functionality. That doesn’t mean we can’t create an individual style of practical clothing that is current, age-appropriate and interesting. The most important place to start is with your wardrobe essentials, then you can add seasonal elements for fun!

Wardrobe essentials are worth spending a little more on than you might usually be comfortable with. These are pieces that you’ll likely keep for a long time (and therefore you should follow the washing instructions carefully). We all have enough for around the house and formal occasions, but that in-between look is what most people have a hard time shopping for.

For both men and women, the smart casual must-haves include that great white shirt or blouse, a pair of dark wash dress jeans (yes, dress jeans are a thing), and a jacket (think blazer for over the white shirt, with the dark jeans). These essentials can take you almost anywhere.

Fit is the other critical element. More often than not, folks need to have garments tailored. Whether it be sleeves shortened or a pant hemmed, don’t be afraid to build a relationship with someone who knows that art.

Let the staff in the shops help you! We are so fortunate to have a great variety of family-run businesses in Sidney where staff members are knowledgeable about their product and willing to offer you honest help. Most of us treat our stores like we do our homes, and I don’t think you would walk into someone’s home without smiling and saying hello would you? It can be very rewarding getting to know the names of the staff in the stores you shop at regularly. They tend to remember your previous purchases and can suggest new products you might be interested in!

Creating style is the personal part, and there are choices out there for everyone: whether you like to express yourself with lots of colour, texture and pattern or neutral and monochromatic combinations. For the gentleman, your belt and shoes are great accent pieces to reflect your personality. Ladies may prefer to liven things up with jewellery, a scarf and handbag.

Building a wardrobe of versatile and interchangeable outfits is a much better investment than having a closet full of pieces. As Kim Bremner always advises, if you are picking up just one piece, think of three other things in your closet to wear with it before you make that purchase.

Invest in yourself, you deserve it! At any age or phase of life, it’s amazing what a few good pieces of clothing can do for
your confidence.
