First Word

There is something special about food. It brings people together, creates memories and gives us a reason to linger a little longer around the table. In this issue we celebrate all things culinary – and we couldn’t think of a better way to begin than with our second long table dinner at Kildara Farms. After nine years, we finally gathered again around a beautiful table, surrounded by incredible food, wonderful friends and the magic of a summer evening. It was worth the wait!

This month I had 60th birthday celebrations with some of my closest friends. Being a Maritimer, of course, there was really only one way to celebrate – lobster! But I decided to surprise one of our guests with something a little different for our appetizer: Dungeness crab from our local Satellite Fish Market in Sidney. And here’s the confession: I had never eaten crab before! One bite and I think I may have fallen in love. Who knew I had been missing out all these years?

We also enjoyed homemade corzetti pasta, farm-to-table vegetables and a beautiful blueberry-inspired cake from Cakes by Colleen. It was the kind of meal that reminds you that food is about so much more than what’s on the plate– it’s about the people around the table, the stories being shared and the memories being made.

Thats what I love most about food – it continually surprises us. It introduces us to new flavours, brings back old traditions and gives us stories to share.
So, enjoy our Culinary Issue! Inside you’ll find plenty of delicious “food nuggets,” from the love of baking (pg 26) and eating your way through Italy (pg 38) to three delicious ways to use squid (pg 32) … and so much more.

Here’s to good food, good friends, new discoveries, and always leaving a little room for dessert!
