Exist-entialism – Exist Hairworx

– by Lara Gladych –

This is the second in a four-part series showcasing some of the unique local shops and services the Saanich Peninsula has to offer.

Sam Quinn and Yvonne Campbell, stylists and owners at Exist Hairworx in Sidney, want you to know that they are two women who don’t take themselves too seriously. Which isn’t to say that they aren’t serious about their work – they are. They just have a lot of fun and many laughs in the course of business.

They have the best jobs in the world, as far as they are concerned. “We get to play with hair all day, and get paid for it,” says Yvonne jovially. “All of our clients turn into friends, so in essence, we’re with our friends, listening to music and drinking coffee all day.” The sentiment makes me smile.

Their recent move to Seaport Place was an opportunity Sam and Yvonne couldn’t pass up, after 15 years in the original location – seven under their co-ownership. They feel extremely fortunate to have come into the building just in time to see the revitalization of the neighborhood.

Though they’re still getting used to their new location, they look forward to taking advantage of all this spot has to offer. Views of the sail-past, fireworks and events they hope to plan in conjunction with their neighbours on either side: Sarah, at The Surly Mermaid, and Bill, at the Rumrunner.

“This salon is like Cheers,” says Sam. I can tell that it really characterizes what goes on here, perhaps also reminiscent of a scene from Steel Magnolias. Everybody knows everybody else, and people come in to say “Hi” and chat with their ‘therapists,’ even if they aren’t getting their hair done. “It’s like a sisterhood.”

They see many women, of course, and Yvonne makes me laugh when she says, “We’re all doing the same thing. We’re in the ‘grey’ category. We’re women in, or approaching, our 40s, wanting to cover grey but still be on-trend and current.” All that said, don’t be deterred, men. They love you too!

If you are new to the salon in general, or haven’t yet visited the new location, there are a few things to know. In the way of products, they carry Moroccan Oil (including the body line, of which they are exclusive carriers), Joico, and ColorProof. Waxing and nail services are now available in-house with Talia Sandsmark, of Blush Esthetics. Very importantly, there is the ever-constant parking question. Exist has three, free designated spots in the pay lot outside, but there is also free parking on the street and beneath the Pier Hotel.

The new website is up and running, so watch for updates on styles and trends, along with some fun anecdotes. I personally love the Meet the Team page. Visit www.existhairworx.com.

Exist is located at #1-C Seaport Place. To book an appointment, call 250.656.2321.
