This is the second in a four-part series on some of the unique and local shops the Saanich Peninsula has to offer.
Why on earth do people refer to facelifts, spa services and beauty creams as just “cosmetic” and “superficial?” There is nothing superficial about doing things that make us feel wonderful and boost our self esteem. Feeling good about ourselves enhances our mental health and well-being and fuels our success in life. Joan Wilson concurs; the owner of a new Medi-Spa in Sidney, she wants her customers to look and feel like a million!
Joan opened Sea Breeze Laser & Beauty Clinic, on Beacon Avenue, June 1st. The amiable beauty professional has spent most of her life in the fashion and cosmetic industries. Presently, Joan offers laser hair removal and a cosmetic / beauty product line. Sun spot and surface spider vein removal are coming in the near future. The Certified Laser Technician uses the term “Medi-Spa” for her business, referring to “treatments and products that really work, that actually do make a difference in someone’s appearance.” Her medical-grade laser really does the job: “It is effective and makes an impressionable difference, as close to permanent as you can get!” According to Joan, the safe procedure costs much less overall than a lifetime of ineffective shaving and creams.
“Anti-Aging” is more than a catch-phrase to Joan: “I only want things in my business that are effective and long-term.” Joan is passionate about her clinic’s “pharmaceutical-grade” unique line of “high-level” cosmetics with “no fillers.” Most important to her, they work: “You see a noticeable difference in people who use them.” Joan explains that the products contain peptides which turn on “good” growth factors in the skin, while turning off ”bad” growth factors. Joan sells after-laser creams, anti-wrinkle smoothers and surface compounds that relax the muscles under the skin to fade out lines – an alternative to injections and invasive procedures. She even offers a line to treat rosacea, or redness of the skin.
What are the benefits to self-esteem? Joan: “We all know that when we do something that makes us feel better about ourselves, it changes our attitude, makes us feel more positive about everything. We feel more confident.” She talks about a male customer (men are welcome too) who had prominent hair on his back. “He had not been on a vacation for eight years, because he wouldn’t take his shirt off.” After her laser treatments, “He is so happy” with the results and “he is taking his first vacation in years!” Joan says that the boost in his self-esteem has already raised his quality of life. “The treatments were healing something in him, helping him feel better about himself.”
Superficial? Hardly!
