Inside Out – Oral Health and Overall Well-Being: It Starts in Your Mouth

Words Peggy White, Holistic Nutritionist, Founder of Gut Healthy

Did you know your mouth is home to billions of bacteria that may be influencing your heart, brain and immune system? It’s true, and during my last dental check-up, I was reminded just how much oral health matters.

The hygienist greeted me with the usual cheerful option: “Let’s get started with some mouthwash. Today’s flavours are mint, raspberry or bubble gum. Which one would you like?” I replied with a smile: “No thanks; we’ve had this conversation before.” He laughed. “Ah yes, the oral microbiome. Now I remember!”

This playful exchange happens every visit, but it’s based on something serious: your oral microbiome, a community of microorganisms that’s vital to more than just your teeth.
When we hear “microbiome,” we often think gut. But the mouth is the beginning of the digestive tract and a crucial ecosystem in its own right. The oral microbiome is made up of hundreds of species of bacteria (over 700 kinds!). These bacteria help:

  • Start digestion
  • Protect against harmful pathogens
  • Support immune function

When this delicate balance is thrown off, it can lead to cavities, gum disease and even heart disease, inflammation or cognitive decline.

Here are some daily practices that help keep your oral microbiome thriving:

Brush and Floss – Gently and Consistently. Nighttime oral care is extra important as saliva slows down while you sleep, making it easier for bacteria to take over.

Tongue Cleaning. Brushing or scraping your tongue can help eliminate bacteria that cause bad breath and support microbial balance.

Handle Acid with Care. Love citrus, kombucha or vinegar? Rinse with water afterward and wait 30 minutes before brushing to protect enamel.

Breathe Through Your Nose. Mouth breathing dries out the oral cavity and reduces saliva, which helps protect your teeth.

Don’t Ignore Acid Reflux. If you experience heartburn or a sour taste in your mouth, acid reflux could be harming your teeth. Talk to your healthcare provider.

Be mindful of products such as:

Mouthwash. Many contain alcohol and antiseptics that kill all bacteria – beneficial and harmful. Choose alcohol-free or saltwater rinses.

Toothpaste. Look for ingredients like hydroxyapatite (a mineral that strengthens enamel) and xylitol (which reduces cavity-causing bacteria).

Whitening Treatments. Ingredients like hydrogen peroxide can disrupt your microbiome. Whitening isn’t off-limits – just be mindful of frequency and follow with microbiome-friendly care.

A healthy oral microbiome doesn’t just prevent cavities: it may lower your risk of heart disease, reduce systemic inflammation and support immune and brain function.

Everything in your body is connected. Oral health is about more than clean teeth – it’s part of your body’s bigger picture.

So the next time you brush your teeth, think of it as an act of self-care for your gut, heart, mind and beyond.
