Last Word with Allison Smith

As I write this month’s column the days are still warm but the nights have a nip in the air and the leaves on my Japanese maple are developing a rust-coloured tinge … fall is on the way.

With the changing of the seasons comes a big change in my life – I am leaving Seaside to have a baby, due in October.

There will be two wonderful women taking over for me while I’m gone: Kelsey Boorman (kelsey@seasidemagazine.ca), a graduate of the Design program at Emily Carr, will be handling all of the ad design and layout; and Deborah Rogers (deborah@seasidemagazine.ca), a member of the Professional Editors Association of Vancouver Island, will be filling the role of Editor in Chief. Seaside has been my “baby” for so long now (over five and a half years!) that it will be hard to let go of the reins for these next months. I will miss the magazine – I’m lucky to be one of those people who enjoys coming to work every day – but I know I have an even greater adventure ahead of me, and can’t wait! I’m sure Deborah will keep you all posted on our new little “Seasider” and you know Sue: she’s already got a cover planned!

Another member of our Seaside team is on to new things:
Linda Hunter, one of Seaside’s regular writers, will be handing her very informative New & Noteworthy column over to the capable hands of Susan Simosko. Linda and her husband are working on a plan to live abroad on a part-time basis as of 2016, so please join me in sending her our best wishes on this goal! You may recognize Susan’s name, either from around the community or in the pages of Seaside – she writes the bimonthly Friends & Neighbours column and is excited to take on this new challenge. If you have news about Saanich Peninsula businesses, Susan would be happy to hear about it and she can be reached at susan@seasidemagazine.ca.

The month also brought sad news: I’m sure many of you will remember Linda Langwith, who used to write our Seaside Homes column, along with many other articles including the Peninsula Winery profiles. Her daughter recently emailed to let me know that Linda has passed away. Linda was a lovely woman who will be sorely missed. “Her writing, in particular her work with Seaside Magazine, was an important part of her life, which brought her great enjoyment,” said Jennifer. We have missed her writer’s voice over the past months, and my condolences go out to her family.

Changing seasons, and big changes afoot at Seaside …
see you all soon!
