A regular article writer and social media manager for Seaside Magazine, Doreen Gee is pushing the boundaries of her creative world. She has just completed a two year labour of love – an Art & Photo Book-Calendar about her beloved James Bay, place of childhood dreams and magic.
Raised in James Bay, Victoria, Doreen spent her formative years amidst an enchanted wonderland: sun-speckled Dallas Road beaches, majestic Beacon Hill Park and the romantic stony breakwater walkway meandering through ocean mists. Those halcyon days in a seaside paradise are in her blood. Two years ago, Doreen felt an overwhelming desire to document her love for the natural beauty of James Bay. What better way than in photos – only a camera lens can capture the essence of shiny eye-candy in a little girl’s eyes.
The result is a collection of Doreen’s favourite photos of James Bay taken over a year and a half. The avid photographer also added some graphic designs of her images to boost the “fun factor” and scattered a few words throughout to spice everything up. Doreen designed, wrote and published the book-calendar herself, using an online template from a local printing company – all taking six months to complete.
“The Rapture of James Bay” is an 18-month calendar that extends until December 2015, full of Doreen’s photos and designs showing many James Bay panoramas. It also contains photos of buildings that evoke a rich history. The artist thinks of her project as more than just a calendar: she sees it as a book of photos and art. Doreen showed her book-calendar to Paul Nursey, the new CEO of Tourism Victoria: “Mr. Nursey is very appreciative and supportive of local artists and I was thrilled when he said that my calendar is beautiful.”
