Rare Jet Lands at B.C. Aviation Museum
B.C. Aviation Museum has acquired a rare Cold War-era de Havilland Vampire jet, an important piece of Canadian aviation history and the country’s first operational fighter aircraft. The jet also served with the Blue Devils aerobatic team before being retired from military service in 1958. After its service life, the aircraft passed through several private owners, including actor, pilot and aviation enthusiast John Travolta, who owned the Vampire from 1989 to 1991. His name remains painted on the fuselage below the cockpit, adding a unique chapter to the aircraft’s history. The jet will now become a featured attraction at the museum, where it will help tell the story of Canada’s early jet age.

Healing the Waterfront Naturally
Sheets of polyethylene plastic are being used to solarize the soil along a section of the Waterfront Walkway. This is a natural method that harnesses the sun’s heat to eliminate weeds, weed seeds and harmful soil organisms without chemicals.

The covering will remain in place for several months to complete the process. After that, the area will be replanted with native plants with guidance from local First Nations.

VIRL Celebrates 90 Years of Service
Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) is celebrating 90 years of service to communities across Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, Bella Coola, and the Central Coast. Established in 1936, VIRL is one of the first shared service organizations in British Columbia and a cornerstone of community well-being.

It all began with a small grant of $500 from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, six library branches and a collection of 12,648 books. Today, VIRL is one of British Columbia’s largest and most geographically diverse public library systems, serving urban centres and some of Canada’s most rural and remote communities. This milestone reflects more than the growth of an organization. It represents a shared public value: access to information, ideas, learning, and opportunity must be available to everyone.

Celebrations continue throughout the summer, with the VIRL 90th Anniversary Passport Program. People of all ages are invited to explore branches across the region, collect unique branch stamps, and enter regional and system-wide prize draws. www.virl.bc.ca/90th.
